Luthiers for agents.

We make the parts, your agents make the instrument, and you say when it fits.

Listen

Crossroads Rewired, made with ismail. Every sound is synthesized: no samples, no recorded audio. Guitar, bass and drum voices and the band's timing feel were fitted to a 1970 Jimi Hendrix recording, measurements only. Strings modeled on VSCO 2 Community Edition (Versilian Studios, CC0) and cello notes by flcellogrl (CC BY 4.0, freesound.org).

ismail is our first instrument. Open source, on GitHub.

Mission

Measured Instruments makes instruments and interfaces that your agents build, measure and fit to you.

No matter what creative field you are in, your agency matters. Agents should not replace your work, but enhance it, and bring your value to the forefront.

Fitted to you

A good personal interface should bend to you, not the other way around, just like a fitted suit should be tailored just for you. The tailor takes measurements, goes away and does the work quickly, comes back and has you try it on again. The fit is set by what you can tell apart and what works, not by what flatters.

I feel the act of play, not just prompting, looking at results and telling the agent what's wrong.Nate, who started Measured Instruments

Play is where creativity happens. Chat is one part of that, and it iterates at a lower bandwidth than live music, interactive VR or a phone in your hand can give you.

We make instruments that get better over time, using the agents you already have, on your own machine.

What we make

ismailInterfaces your agent runs and rebuilds for you: a DAW, a VR stage and a phone page. Open source, on your own machine.

Each project has a page for people and a plain page for agents.

How we work

Open source, and on your own machine. We credit every recording an instrument was measured from. A number steers only after it agrees with your ear, in a blind test. We hold ourselves to a small vocabulary, and we name the papers and people we learned from.

The team is one person deciding and AI agents doing the work, each in one role. Contributors are welcome.

Work with me

I take on a few projects at a time, and I'm open to the right full-time role.

Agent toolingMCP servers and tool surfaces that agents use reliably, for domains that are hard to put into words: sound, 3D, media.
Sound for AI videoScores and sound design written to your cut, editable after the fact, checked by measurement and by ear.
Graded environmentsTasks where an agent's output is scored against a reference's own variation, for evaluation and training.

For builders

If you build agents, tools or harnesses, this part is for you.

We see code as art, but we also see it as artisanal. As agents get faster at writing it, software has become everywhere at once, and the whole industry has been pushed into a chaotic moment. The game is no longer how fast you can code. It is how fast we can all get past the limits we once thought held back what our creative minds can imagine.

So we stopped racing to build harnesses, and asked what we could give harnesses power over. Our instruments and interfaces are harness agnostic: your harness, your machine.
